Lake Sanabria once again became one of the major venues for national and international canoeing today with the 63rd Sanabria International Regatta – Nations and Regions, an event that brings together more than a thousand paddlers and strengthens a tradition that began in 1962. A total of 1,015 athletes and 478 boats gathered on the waters of the natural park, in a day that combines international, national and regional competition.

The event is part of the 2026 Castilla y León International Canoeing Circuit and is organised by the Provincial Canoeing Delegation of Zamora, the Castilla y León Canoeing Federation and the Royal Spanish Canoeing Federation, with support from the Zamora Provincial Council, the Castilla y León Regional Government and the Galende Town Council, along with several private sponsors.

The sports programme opens with the 5th Spanish Championships in K4 and C4 Long Distance, held over 5,000 metres, and continues with races for veterans, senior, under-23, junior and cadet categories, in K1, K2, C1 and C2 disciplines. Fifty clubs from ten autonomous communities are taking part, making the regatta one of the most widely attended competitions in the province.

The K4 International Grand Prix brings together the national teams of Spain, Hungary, Germany, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Denmark, with particular interest in the duel between Spain and Hungary, the current holders of the trophy. Spain’s men’s K4 features paddlers with strong international credentials, while the women’s team also fields a competitive line-up that includes athletes from Zamora.
Beyond the sporting results, the regatta strengthens the bond between canoeing and the region: the event acts as a showcase for Sanabria, attracts visitors and highlights the lake as a key destination for outdoor sport and nature tourism.
